The Indian state of Assam is in the north east of the country with Bangladesh to the south and China to the north. Through the middle of Assam runs the mighty Brahmaputra which goes on a journey south to join the Ganges. The waters come from the high Himalaya and feed the valley floor with life. The famous Assam tea estates started in the 1840's following the discovery of the tea bush Camellia Sinensis. The British started these tea estates. My Grandfather Mr Robert Stammers went from Lincolnshire to work in Assam in the 1920's starting our families long ties with tea.
Assam Leaf Tea and Tea Bags
Assam tea is traditionally a Black Tea. A strong full bodied tea with a malty flavour. A good morning tea and when blended with Ceylon Orange Pekoe is the true English Breakfast Tea. From Assam we have many different grades of teas coming through across the tea growing season. At the top end we have some SFTGFOP grades and for tea bags we get pekoe fannings. Following production the teas are packed and sent down to Calcutta or Kolkata as we should call it now. Here the Calcutta auctions is the selling hub and from there shipped to the world markets including the UK.
At our Pluckley factory we pack a range of different Assam Leaf Teas from a variety of estates. As an annual crop the qualities do vary as do our offerings . We also pack Assam estate tea bags on our tea bagging machines, that is when we use the Assam pekoe fannings teas.
