The everyday Tea Bag is a very useful way of brewing tea quickly and with out the mess of tea leaves. Today over 90% of all tea drunk is with tea bags. Here at the Kent Tea company our tea machines only pack the traditional shaped tea bags tea bags that are square or rectangular. Round and pyramid shaped tea bags have been invented but make no difference when it comes to brewing, and in the case of round tea bags a lot of tea bag paper is wasted when the paper is cut into the circle !.

Tea Bag History

The common tea bag has been with us for over one hundred years. To start with made of from silk and muslin, with the paper tea bags coming along in the last 40 years. Today Nylon is occasionally used but press reports question if this is not healthy. When we first returned from India and started our tea company we used to make hand made muslin tea bags from rectangles of the material run through a sewing machine and filled before sealing by. Mother was an expert ! .

Tea Bagging Machines

Today our tea bag machines work at a variety of speeds producing between 160 and 1,000 tea bags per minute. Tea bag paper is fed into the machine and fold into place before heated sealers crimp the paper together at the precise moment that the exact dose of tea is injected into the tea bag. Cutters then slit vertically and finally horizontally to produce the square shape. The electronic counters count the number required - 40 , 80 , 275 or 1100 tea bags before resetting.
In the uk today the English prefer the stronger two cup tea bag, this has 3,125grams of tea in each bag.One cup tea bags have only 2.27grams of tea . Each will brew you a good strong cup of tea but in this day and age of rush people expect to put a tea bag in a mug and give it a stir and Bob's your uncle. So if you buy 80 Tea Bags ( 250g ) you are using two cup tea bags.
The Continental way is to use large empty tea bags which you fill with the loose leaf tea of your choice and then brew. We sell these empty tea filters online at £ 2.95p for 80 bags.

Unfortunately the onset of tea bags resulted in the quality of the daily cuppa going down the drain. Tagged Tea Bags - are tea bags that are folded and a tag and string added. Generally they cannot hold as much tea but are convenient to use. If you wonder why when you travel the world and get served a cup of hot water with a hint of tea that is because quite often tagged tea bags are used with 1gram of tea.... catastrophe !!.
