Process Used When Making Genmai Cha Tea
The process of creating our Genmai Cha Tea begins with the careful selection of top-tier tea. These leaves are expertly picked during the optimal harvesting season to ensure they contain the perfect balance of flavour and nutritional benefits. Once harvested, the leaves are immediately steamed to lock in freshness, a characteristic trait of Japanese teas.
Concurrently, brown rice is meticulously toasted until it achieves a deep, golden hue and an enticingly rich, nutty aroma. This toasted brown rice is the distinctive component that gives Genmai Cha its unique "popcorn" moniker and its signature flavour profile.
The final stage of the process involves blending the steamed Sencha Green Tea leaves and toasted brown rice in precise proportions. This delicate operation is crucial to achieve the perfect harmony between the buttery, nutty taste of the brown rice and the subtle astringency of the Sencha Green Tea. The result is a Green Tea with roasted brown rice that offers a unique, satisfying, and healthful tea experience.
Understanding the History of Genmai Cha
The historical origins of Genmai Cha trace back to the 15th century in Japan. During these times of scarcity, the common people found innovative ways to expand their meagre tea supplies. Mixing toasted brown rice with their tea was one such method. This not only increased the quantity of their tea servings but also added a unique, appealing flavour to their brew.
Brown rice was a staple in the Japanese diet and was readily available, making it a practical choice for this blend. This innovative concoction quickly gained popularity, providing a robust, satisfying tea that could be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of social standing. The unique fusion was named Genmai Cha, with 'Genmai' translating to 'brown rice' and 'Cha' denoting 'tea'.
Over time, the blend evolved, with Sencha Green eventually replacing the originally used lower grade tea leaves. This evolution elevated the quality of the blend, enhancing its flavour profile and health benefits. Today, our Japanese Sencha Genmai Cha continues this tradition of innovation and quality, delivering a green tea with roasted brown rice that is as nutritious as it is delicious.
How to Brew Japanese Sencha Genmai Cha Tea
Follow these step-by-step instructions for a perfect brew of cup:
1. Measure Your Tea: Start by measuring the appropriate amount of tea. For one cup of tea, you will typically need one teaspoon of loose Genmai Cha.
2. Preheat Your Teapot: To ensure consistent brewing, preheat your teapot or teacup by pouring boiled water into it and swishing it around. Discard the warming water before adding your tea leaves.
3. Heat Your Water: Best brewed with water at a temperature of around 80-85°C (176-185°F). If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, you can achieve this by letting boiling water cool for a minute or two.
4. Infuse Your Tea: Add the Genmai Cha to your preheated teapot or teacup, then pour over the heated water. Ensure the leaves are all submerged.
5. Steep Your Tea: Allow the tea to steep for about 2-3 minutes. The exact steeping time can be adjusted according to your preference for a stronger or milder brew.
6. Strain and Serve: Once the tea has steeped, strain it into a cup to remove the tea leaves and toasted rice. Your Japanese Sencha Genmai Cha is now ready to be enjoyed.
Remember, the delicious, nutty flavour and refreshing green tea astringency of this tea make it a delightful drink to enjoy at any time of day.
Tasting Notes: Indulge in the perfect blend of bitter and sweet flavors, accompanied by delightfully warm toasty tones.
Caffeine Content: Moderate caffeine content, making it suitable for consumption at any time of day.
Caffeine Content: The caffeine content in a standard 8oz cup of green tea usually ranges from 25 to 45 mg.

It took me 3 or 4 cups of my first Genmaicha to start to enjoy the flavour fully, now it remains a firm favourite and this is one of the finest I've tried, made all that more special with the addition of a little Matcha. Slightly nutty and sweet but wonderfully smooth and full of character.Review by Trusted Customer

Smells brilliant (like popcorn) and adds a nice slightly nutty taste to a green tea, the "popcorn" aspect doesn't quite come through as much in the taste as the smell but I still really like this.Review by Trusted Customer
