Bedford was established at a ford on the River Great Ouse, with some historians suggesting that it’s the burial place of Offa of Mercia. During the late 9th century, it became a boundary town separating Wessex and Danelaw.

By the Middle Ages, it had transformed into a thriving market town for the surrounding agricultural region. Bedford received its borough status in 1165, and went on to specialise in lace manufacture.

Today, of course, it’s better known for several outstanding Afternoon Tea Bedford venues. Why not find out for yourself?
