The history of Kilkenny dates back to the early 6th century when it was within the Kingdom of Ossory. Following the Norman invasion of Ireland, the local castle and a series of walls were constructed to protect what would become a merchant town.
Kilkenny received its charter in 1207. Centuries later, in 1609, King James I of England granted it a Royal Charter, thus giving it city status.
Today, Kilkenny hosts a multitude of historic tourist attractions. This includes Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice’s Cathedral and round tower, Rothe House, Shee Alms House, Black Abbey and St. Mary’s Cathedral.
