The history of Swords dates back to 560 CE when it was reputedly founded by Saint Colmcille. According to legend, the since canonised abbot blessed a local well, giving the settlement its name, “Sord”, meaning “clear” or “pure”.

Much of the town developed during the Medieval era, with Swords Castle constructed in the early 13th century. Today, tourists can soak up the rich history and heritage of the area before or after venturing into an Afternoon Tea Swords venue.
