Historically, Ramsey was once the landing place for several invasions by the Vikings and the Scots. It later became one of the primary points of communication with Scotland, in particular, before developing a unique identity of its own.

The likes of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as well as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in the years following, have made royal visits to this area.
