The history of Hartlepool began in the 7th century when it was established around the monastery of Hartlepool Abbey. The village developed during the Medieval era, with its harbour serving as the official port of the County Palatine of Durham.
Following the arrival of the railway in the 1800s, Hartlepool expanded further and eventually transformed into a thriving coastal town.
By the First World War, the area’s vital industries made it a target for the Imperial German Navy, unfortunately resulting in significant damage and loss of life. For decades after and until the 1990s, the town struggled.
Thankfully, it has since recovered and now boasts several outstanding Afternoon Tea Hartlepool establishments. Lunch, anyone?
