The history of Morpeth arguably dates back to the Neolithic period many thousands of years ago. Development was gradual but consistent, with it receiving its market charter in 1199. By the 18th century, Morpeth had become one of the main markets in the country.

However, the opening of the railways in the 1800s, thus making other locations more accessible, led to its decline.

Nowadays, Morpeth is most famous for the annual Northumbrian Gathering, an event held over a weekend in mid-April that continues to attract swathes of visitors. Also popular, of course, is the opportunity to stop in an Afternoon Tea Morpeth venue.
