The first mention of Whitley Bay (then known as Whitley) dates back to around 1100 CE, its development taking place over several hundreds of years.

From the late 19th century and into the 20th century, the decline of the local coal mining industry saw the town’s economy suffer.

However, the area was eventually rejuvenated by the emergence of Whitey as a seaside holiday resort. Today, it hosts several Afternoon Tea Witney Bay Tearooms – all of which are well worth visiting.
