Ayr grew in significance after becoming a Royal Burgh in 1205. It served as Ayrshire’s central marketplace and harbour during much of the Medieval era, which in turn led to further development of the area.
Centuries later, Oliver Cromwell began construction of a citadel on the southern bank of the River Ayr. The town went on to have a close association with the Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was born nearby.
