Archaeological evidence indicates that the Romans had a presence in the Cumbernauld area many hundreds of years ago. Later during the Medieval era, the local castle (since demolished) hosted visiting royalty while the grounds became famous for their frequently hunted white cattle.

Significant development took place as the weaving industry grew, eventually supplemented by mining and quarrying. It received New Town status in 1955.
