Heathfield was established upon an ancient trackway known as The Ridgeway that connected the South Downs with the Weald. It was granted a market charter in 1316 during the reign of Edward II.

Iron manufacturing brought prosperity to the area throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. By the late 1800s, the arrival of the railway led to further development.
