Historically, Aldershot was but a small, little known village until Victorian times. Its name, however, may have derived from alder trees found here many centuries before.
This was likely from the Old English term ‘alder-holt’, meaning copse of alder trees. By the Domesday Book of 1086, Aldershot had developed into a market town, yet it remained relatively quiet until 1854.
At the time of the Crimean War, the establishment of Aldershot Garrison brought about significant expansion to the area. Soon after, the town’s population also increased rapidly.
Aldershot later played a major role in both world wars before becoming a much-loved tourist destination. Today, you can embrace its rich history – as well as indulge at an Afternoon Tea Aldershot venue!
