The history of Emsworth began in Saxon times when it was but a village. At this time, it was linked to the settlement of Warblington nearby, and as such, wasn’t mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The settlement grew in size and importance over several centuries, later becoming known for shipbuilding, rope making and oyster fishing.

During the Second World War, the Royal Air Force set up a station on nearby Thorney Island, which played a significant role in the Battle of Britain.

Prior to D-Day, the Canadian Army trained in the woods close by, with the foundations of their barracks still visible today. You can soak up the town’s rich history on your next visit. For lunch, be sure to spend time at an Afternoon Tea Emsworth venue.
