The history of Farnborough likely began during the Saxon era. Records of the town later appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was known as “Ferneberga”, meaning “fern hill”. Over several hundred years, its name changed multiple times. During the 13th century, it was called “Farnburghe” and then “Farenberg”.
By the 16th century, it had changed again from “Farnborowe” to “Fremborough” to “Farneborough”. Eventually, the name “Farnborough” stuck – or at least for now!
Farnborough is home to St. Michael’s Abbey, the final resting place of the last Emperor of France, Napoleon III (1808-1873). Perhaps most noteworthy, however, is its close association with British aviation – Farnborough Airshow, Farnborough Aerodrome, Royal Aircraft Establishment and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
It’s time, then, to appreciate everything on offer. Start your day out by stopping at an Afternoon Tea Farnborough venue.
