Tadley is perhaps best known for the relatively local Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE), now known as AWE. During the 1950s and 60s, this facility was the area’s largest employer, with many of the town’s houses built to accommodate workers.

Long before then, however, Tadley was but a small, rural community with modest origins, the spirit of which has since been restored.

A local legend from the 19th century claims that there were treacle mines located in Tadley. Sadly, yet somewhat unsurprisingly, this was proven untrue. However, one can still get their ‘sweet-fix’ by visiting an Afternoon Tea Tadley establishment!
