While the Domesday book of 1086 makes mention of Gillingham, it was, during this time, but a small hamlet. By the medieval era, a part of the area known as the Grange was a limb of the Cinque Ports. It continued to have maritime significance for many centuries after. In fact, much of the famous Chatham dockyard lies within Gillingham rather than its namesake!

In 1667, the Dutch invaded the town via the nearby River Medway. Today, however, visitors worry less about European raids and more about finding a suitable place to stop for lunch. For this, there are several Afternoon Tea Gillingham venues to choose from. Expect a friendly face and professional service in whichever establishment you eventually decide upon.
