Welcome to Margate, a quintessentially English seaside town located in Thanet, Kent. For over 250 years, this quaint area has enthralled tourists from across the UK.
Like its neighbour Ramsgate, it has been of particular interest to holiday-makers from London. Many find themselves drawn by the sandy beaches, rich culture and, of course, Afternoon Tea in Margate.

In 1264, records noted this town as “Meregate”. It had changed to its current name by 1299, although the spelling continued to vary into modern times. Margate (or “Meregate”, if you will) has had many noteworthy moments in history.
In 1387, the Battle of Margate was one such moment, although it remains relatively unknown! The town was also once a “limb” of Dover as part of the Cinque ports.
The Dreamland Amusement Park is today one of the most popular destinations in Margate. If fun rides aren’t to your taste, however, then there is the option to simply lounge on the sand. Alternatively, you could tuck into some scones and cake at one of many Afternoon Tea Margate venues throughout the town. The choice is yours. Choose well!
