The history of this town, or at least the one that preceded it, dates back to the Saxon era. Its name derives from the Old English words “burh”, meaning “fortified town”, and “ford”, referring to a river crossing.

A settlement stood in this area until just after the Norman conquest when the new town of Burford was constructed. Development continued over several centuries, with it becoming a hub for wool trade until the 1600s. Now, it is better known for a number of Afternoon Tea Burford establishments!
