The first records of Henley date back to 1179. These stated that King Henry II “had bought land for the making of buildings”. By 1278, the settlement had become a hamlet with a chapel.

Development continued over hundreds of years, eventually being extended to the River Thames by the 16th century (hence the name!). It was granted its original charter by Elizabeth I, which was later replaced by George I in 1722.

So why not soak up the town’s history and culture for yourself? What’s more, once you’ve worked up an appetite, visiting an Afternoon Tea Henley-on-Thames venue is an excellent choice.
