Archaeological evidence suggests that people have inhabited this area since at least the Bronze Age. It later became an agricultural settlement during the Saxon era.

Little changed for several hundreds of years until the 18th century. This was when the British Army used Ashford Common for military displays.

Today, such demonstrations have ceased. However, the town now boasts a wide variety of shops, restaurants and Afternoon Tea Ashford establishments.
