The area that now makes up Horley was once densely forested and marshy. Much of the settlement’s history centres around its Manor, which was, for a long time, controlled by the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey.

This later passed to Henry VIII following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Decades later, in 1602, it became the property of Christ’s Hospital in London. At this time, Horley consisted of three hamlets around a huge open common.

Significant development took place during the early 19th century, and by 1841, the railway had arrived in Horley. Since then, the town has become popular on many counts. This, of course, includes it being an excellent place to stop for lunch. Why not visit an Afternoon Tea Horley venue today?
