The name “Cuckfield” (previously spelt “Kukefeld, “Cucufeld”, and “Cucufelda”) has somewhat mysterious origins. However, most agree that it refers to the cuckoo, which is the village emblem.

For centuries, the area was an important coaching stop between London and Brighton. In 1822, Mary Ann Mantell, wife of Dr. Gideon Mantell, found the first known iguanodon fossils nearby.

Nowadays, people come here less for dinosaurs and more for popping into an Afternoon Tea Cuckfield establishment. Expect a friendly face and professional service in whichever venue you eventually decide upon.
