The name “Midhurst” was first recorded as “Middeherst” in 1186. Translated from Old English, this means “Middle wooded hill”, or “place among the wooded hills”.

Although much of the area developed during the Norman era, many of the structures from this period no longer exist. Only the castle, the parish church and the South Pond remain.

On your next visit to Midhurst, start your day off by wandering through nearby South Downs National Park. Afterwards, soak up some history and heritage at the local museum. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time to stop in an Afternoon Tea Midhurst establishment for lunch.
