The name “Bideford” means “by the ford”, with evidence suggesting that the settlement once stood at a natural crossing point. A bridge was eventually constructed from timber in 1300, followed by a stone structure in 1535.

During the English Civil War, local residents supported the Parliamentarian cause. Centuries later, some 2,500 people emigrated to Canada and 250 to the United States aboard ships from Bideford.
