Historically, Budleigh Salterton has a close association with the famous Elizabethan explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh, who was born on a farm nearby. The Raleigh family had settled here in 1537, and soon became an integral part of the community.

The young Sir Walter spent many of his boyhood days in Budleigh Salterton, possibly acquiring his love for the sea while in the company of local fishermen. Now, tourism plays a significant role in the local economy, including several Afternoon Tea  Budleigh Salterton venues.
