Records suggest that this settlement began during the Roman period when a fort on a nearby hill was constructed. It was later settled by Anglo-Saxons, with Alfred the Great leaving it to his youngest son, Aethelweard, in his will.
During the English Civil War, Royalists tried to raise troops in Cullompton but were met by resistance from the local people.
The town’s economy once relied heavily on wool and cloth manufacture before becoming known for its leather and paper trade. It has suffered much over the years, with fires (one in 1839 and another in 1958), riots and declining industries all influencing its history.
However, significant expansion took place in the 1970s, which has since given rise to several Afternoon Tea Cullompton venues.
