The name “Ivybridge” comes from a small 13th century hump-backed bridge of the same name, which was the only local river crossing for hundreds of years.
It had ivy growing across it, and was the centre of the settlement as it developed. Construction of mills took place in the 16th century, specialising in corn and tin production.
In the 1830s, the Ivy Bridge lost its position as the only crossing following the building of the “New Bridge.” It wasn’t until 1977 that this location officially became a town.
