Gloucestershire comprises a sizable part of the Cotswold Hills, as well as the flat, fertile valley of the River Severn and the entire Forest of Dean. Historically, the Brythonic people inhabited the area in the Iron Age and Roman periods, followed by the West Saxon tribe of the Hwiccas.
The territory later became a dependency of Mercia in the 7th century, but was not brought under West Saxon dominion until the 9th century.
When the Danes arrived in Britain, Gloucestershire was of little significance and remained largely undeveloped. Centuries later, during the English Civil War, the locals sided predominantly with the Parliamentarian cause.
Today, most know (and love) this county for hosting several Afternoon Tea Gloucestershire establishments. Why not find out for yourself?
