Exploring the Curious History of Thornbury in Gloucestershire
Archaeological evidence indicates that people have lived in the area since the Neolithic era. A Roman presence later became apparent following the discovery of the Thornbury hoard, a collection of 11,460 coins from the period.
Nevertheless, the earliest known record of the community itself dates from the 9th century. Thornbury eventually appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Thornbyrig”.
The town received its charter in 1252 before its name was used for Thornbury Township in Pennsylvania (modern-day United States of America) in 1687. In 1765, the local Dr John Fewster distributed a paper entitled “Cow Pow and its Ability to Prevent Smallpox”.
This would then influence his friend and colleague Edward Jenner, pioneer of vaccination. The rest, of course, is history.
Things to Do Before or After a Thornbury Afternoon Tea
One of Thornbury’s notable features is its castle, a Tutor building that was once the home of Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. Those keen to wander about, meanwhile, could venture down the Streamside Walk or into Filnore Woods.
There are also plenty of shopping opportunities. Just don’t forget to have an Afternoon Tea in Thornbury once you’ve worked up an appetite.
