History of Chard in Somerset
Though its name might be better associated with a certain vegetable, the community has a long and fascinating history dating back millennia. Indeed, the earliest evidence of people living in the area is a local Iron Age Fort. It later became the site of an Anglo-Saxon settlement before appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086. King John provided the town with its first charter in 1234.
Much of Chard suffered significant damage following a fire in 1577, as well as during the English Civil War when both sides plundered it for its resources. Chard eventually became a defensive position in World War II in preparation for a potential German invasion.
