According to Indian Ayurveda, with its holistic view of wellbeing, early Chai Teas, then known as Kadhas, could balance the three ‘doshas’ in the body. Thousands of years later and Chai Tea, this time according to modern science, continues to improve our health.
Studies suggest that Chai Tea benefits include an improved digestive system, relief from aches and pains, a healthier heart, a boosted immune system, reduced inflammation and even stronger bones. In this blog, we will explore Chai Tea benefits in depth.
Chai Tea Benefits
For those who don’t know, Chai Tea is a flavoured Black Tea from India that contains a variety of herbs and spices. Recipes differ from region to region, village to village and sometimes even household to household. Common ingredients, however, include:

There are, of course, many more choices. But these particular ingredients, when combined with Black Tea, make for a match made in heaven. Not only does Chai Tea taste great, but it also comes with extraordinary Chai Tea benefits.
Each ingredient has something different to offer in the way of Chai Tea benefits. Turmeric, for example, can aid weight loss. Cloves, on the other hand, can balance blood sugar levels, making it an excellent choice for those living with type-2 diabetes.
Perhaps most importantly, the Loose Leaf Tea in this beverage contributes significantly to Chai Tea health benefits. It contains two particularly beneficial polyphenols called theaflavin and thearubigin.
These antioxidants, alongside a healthy and active lifestyle, can slow down the natural, though harmful, process of oxidation by combating free radicals in the body.
Free radicals are unpaired (and unsafe!) electrons that latch onto their stable counterparts, thus creating more unpaired electrons. This chain reaction can increase the risk of developing several chronic conditions, including heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

Chai Helps with Digestion
The latest research indicates that Chai can aid digestion in a plethora of ways. Peppercorns can support the pancreas in secreting digestive enzymes. This, in turn, can help you to digest heavy foods like fats and proteins.
Turmeric, on the other hand, can settle upset stomachs, reduce nausea and promote healthy digestion. It can also stimulate peristaltic motion while eliminating bloating, cramps and constipation. It may even, according to some studies, treat ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Cinnamon can also help. It, too, calms the stomach, relieves nausea and even combats diarrhoea. Fennel, another ingredient sometimes included in Chai Tea, disperses flatulence. But that isn’t all this remarkable herb can do.
According to a 2012 review published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, fennel increases spontaneous gastric motility and gastric acid secretions in animal models. Additionally, the author of the review, Marco Valussi, said:
“A herbal combination including fennel eliminated intestinal pain by 95% in test subjects who had chronic, nonspecific colitis.”

When it comes to relieving aches and pains, curcumin in Turmeric works on a molecular level. It blocks NF-kB, a molecule that travels into the nuclei of cells and turns on genes related to inflammation, thus providing relief.
Furthermore, cinnamon and cloves have a role to play in this particular Chai Tea benefit. Both ingredients contain eugenol, a chemical compound with potent anti-inflammatory properties. This can relieve gum pain, in particular, as well as other areas of inflammation.
When it comes to menstrual discomfort, inflammation is one of the leading causes. For this, Ginger is the choice ingredient to have in Chai Tea.
A double-blind comparative clinical trial showed that this herb could be more effective than common painkillers in relieving inflammatory pain in women with menstrual cramps.
Helps with a Healthy Heart
One of the most vital things we can do is look after our heart. We already know that the antioxidants in Black Tea can, among other qualities, reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. But what else can Chai Tea benefits do?
Again, we have Turmeric Tea Benefits working wonders. Curcumin improves the functionality of the endothelium, which is the lining of our blood vessels. This, in turn, relaxes blood vessels, which ultimately lowers blood pressure.
Curcumin in Turmeric may also reduce the risk of heart attacks. This is according to a study that saw 121 participants - all of whom awaiting coronary artery bypass surgery - split into two groups.
The first group consumed 4 grams of curcumin a day while the second group received a placebo. The research took place a few days before and after the surgery. Results indicated that the curcumin group had a 65% lower risk of experiencing a heart attack in the hospital.
Studies also suggest that peppercorns have the potential to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels in animal models. One study, in fact, noted that rats fed a high-fat diet and a black pepper extract had decreased blood cholesterol levels, including “bad” LDL cholesterol.
2015 Research published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine also recognised star anise as a potential winner, you heart health. This animal-based study noted that mice fed a high-fat diet alongside star anise experienced normalising changes in weight, blood pressure and lipid levels. It also saw a reduced buildup of plaque in arteries.
Chai Helps your Immune System
Ginger contains high amounts of Vitamin C, which in itself supports the immune system. It can also ease symptoms of flu, fever and sinus infections. A popular choice of beverage when it comes to immune system support is Lemon and Ginger Tea. However, it works with Chai Tea benefits, too.
Again, there is much to say about Turmeric. This remarkable ingredient is antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic. It can protect against incoming viruses, according to a study published in a 2009 edition of Emerging Infectious Diseases. The research established that Turmeric reduced viral replication by up to 90% in laboratory cells infected with influenza (flu).
The Journal of Medical Food, meanwhile, has extensively studied the immune system response to both cardamom and peppercorns, the results of which look promising. And when it comes to cinnamon, studies recognise that it can effectively treat respiratory tract infections caused by fungi while inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria.
Aids Healthy Bones
An animal-based study discovered that cloves, with their high content in eugenol, can improve several markers of osteoporosis while increasing bone density and strength. They are also rich in manganese, providing, on average, 30% of the daily recommended amount. This mineral found in cloves influence the formation of bone and is essential for bone health.
Star anise is another contender for this Chai Tea benefit. A 2012 study published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine explains why. Researchers discovered that a compound derived from anise, when administered orally, could have a significantly positive influence on mineral and bone density.
The same study also recognised that fennel could improve postmenopausal bone health.
There is even preliminary research suggesting that we should drink Black Tea for healthy bones. Most studies, however, are on Green Tea. One meta-analysis indicates that 1-4 cups of Tea a day could reduce the risk of hip fracture by up to 28%.
