Lapacho (also known as “Taheebo”) is a Herbal Tea originating from South America. Unlike many other infusions, most of which derive from leaves (including South American Yerba Mate), Lapacho Tea comes from bark! Specifically, it’s the product of inner bark from the pau d'arco tree (Handroanthus impetiginosus), thriving deep within the Amazon rainforest.

Belonging to the Bignoniaceae family, Lapacho has played a significant role in several indigenous communities of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The Tupi and Guarani, in particular, have long consumed it for its Lapacho medicinal uses.

Others who drink Lapacho Tea for this purpose include the Kallawaya, Quechua and Aymara peoples. Many such tribes have dubbed the infusion “Tajy”, meaning either “to have strength and vigour” or, simply, “divine tree”.

What we know for sure is that this beverage contains several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Among them are the reportedly beneficial chemical compounds of lapachol and beta-lapachone.

In 1967, the Brazilian press published several articles on “miraculous” Lapacho medicinal uses relating to cancer treatment. It was believed that lapachol and beta-lapachone were the reason behind this.

Was it true? Despite being decades ago, scientists remain unsure. For this reason, The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company do not endorse Lapacho Tea for this purpose.

We do, however, support ongoing research, which so far suggests that other constituents in this Herbal Tea support wellbeing. Below are just a few examples of (possible!) Lapacho Tea benefits.

The antimicrobial properties in Lapacho Tea might afford protection against the common cold and influenza (flu), according to new research. It’s also believed that its antifungal properties inhibit the processes that bacteria and fungi need to produce oxygen and energy. This might be the primary reason for its popularity among numerous indigenous groups in South America. 

Additionally, some preliminary (emphasis on “preliminary”) studies show that Lapacho can protect against the growth of infectious bacteria in the digestive system.

This could mean, for example, that beta-lapachone in Lapacho has the capacity to inhibit and treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). If proven, this might provide a significant boost to modern medicine, especially as MRSA is notoriously difficult to control.

Many studies clearly establish correlations between Lapacho Tea benefits and weight loss. One such research project, conducted on mice, recognised that the bark inhibits pancreatic lipase.

This is an enzyme that helps your body to digest and absorb dietary fat. By blocking this enzyme, Lapacho essentially has the opposite effect: it reduces fat digestion, resulting in fewer absorbable calories.

Another similar study saw mice fed Lapacho extract over a 16-week period. Researchers concluded that the animals lost more weight than those on a placebo - despite no changes in food intake.

Also noteworthy is evidence that mice fed a high-fat diet alongside Lapacho experience no increases in body weight. We await further studies on humans.

While the Health Benefits of Turmeric Tea have the limelight for their anti-inflammatory properties, it seems they might have competition. Enter Lapacho, a herb that can, according to research, inhibit chemicals known for triggering an inflammatory response in the body. One study on mice, for example, noted that Lapacho extract blocked inflammation by 30-50% compared to a placebo.

This is similar to another study which established that Lapacho blocked the production of compounds associated with chronic inflammatory diseases. It’s essential to note, however, that like Lapacho Tea weight loss benefits, we await further evidence involving humans.

Similar to Lapacho Tea medicinal uses having only limited research in support, scientists can’t agree about the herb’s side effects. This is due to the fact that most evidence involves animals rather than humans.

It’s fair to say, however, that this Herbal Tea ISN’T recommended to those who’re pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because high doses of lapachol, in the rarest of cases, has the potential to cause nausea or vomiting.

Furthermore, due to its blood-thinning abilities of lapacho tea benefits most doctors would advise against consuming Lapacho while taking medication for the same purpose. How to Make Lapacho Tea

How do you make Lapacho Tea? Well, as it turns out, there are two ways! The simplest method is to use a Loose Tea Filter or Tea Infuser. Start by putting the bark into one of these items before placing it inside of a mug or cup.

Following this, pour in boiling water and allow it to steep for 5 to 10 minutes. The longer you leave it, the stronger it tastes. This is similar to most other Herbal Teas.

Alternatively, for the best possible flavour, you could venture down a slightly more complex route. Indeed, with a little extra effort, you’re guaranteed a truly delicious cuppa of exceptional character and profile.

First, put the herb (10 grams per litre) into a saucepan of water and bring it to a boil. Next, allow it to simmer for 5 minutes before removing it from the heat. Finally, leave it to infuse for around 20 minutes before serving. It’ll be well worth the wait.

Richard Smith is a Tea expert, entrepreneur, and owner of The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. Part of a family of renowned Tea planters dating back four generations, he was born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, where he spent his childhood between Tea Estates in Assam and Darjeeling.
