What is Mother’s Day?

What is Mother’s Day?

This famous annual holiday is, on a most fundamental level, about a celebration of motherhood. The tradition dates back millennia to the ancient Romans and Greeks, both societies of which held festivals honouring their respective mother goddesses. Somewhat more recently, the Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday”, held in the UK, Europe and beyond, is the bedrock of the modern incarnation.

Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent when Christians attend a service at their “mother church” - the worshipping site closest to their homes. However, for the most, it has since transformed into a secular holiday for children to present their mothers with flowers, chocolates and other gifts showing their appreciation. Among them, of course, is a Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea.

Mothers Day in UK and US

Why is Mother’s Day Different in the UK to the US?

It’s no secret that the British version of Mother’s Day takes place on a different date to the American event. This is because, in many respects, its origins are different. The incarnation found in the United States stems from around the time of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia created the idea of Mother’s working clubs to teach local women how to care for children.

These events eventually became a way of transcending the stark divisions present in the country, regardless of Union or Confederate backgrounds. By the 1900s, Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, went further still and organised the first official Mother’s Day in America. The idea subsequently became a commercial sensation nationwide - as, indeed, it remains today.

Partner at The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company

Richard Smith is a Tea expert, entrepreneur, and owner of The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. Part of a family of renowned Tea planters dating back four generations, he was born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, where he spent his childhood between Tea Estates in Assam and Darjeeling.

In the late 1970s, having accumulated years of knowledge in the industry, Mr Smith and his mother, Janet Smith, moved to Kent, South East England, to establish a Tea business in the village of Pluckley. Their early days of packing Tea Bags by hand from chests of 10,000 prompted the creation of the company’s flagship infusion known as Pluckley Tea. It remains our most popular product today.

Mr Smith, who studied economics at London Polytechnic, has since specialised in over 1,000 types of Loose Leaf Tea - in addition to around 70 varieties of Roast Coffee - from around the world. These are now available at The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company, where everything is still packed by hand and fresh to order, not only to honour tradition but to ensure the utmost quality and consistency.
