But what, exactly, is caffeine? First discovered by German scientist Friedric Ferdinand Ruge in the 19th century, caffeine is a stimulating chemical compound. Its name is the combination of the German word “kaffee” and the French word “café”.
It exists naturally in around 60 plants. Once consumed, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream before travelling to the liver. There, caffeine is broken down and passed on to numerous other organs in the body, namely the brain.
Its effect on the brain, in particular, is the main reason behind its popularity.
