There was, of course, a time where all farming - be it wheat, grain, tea, or coffee was organic. These days, however. ‘Organic’ is a certification given to products that are, at least, 95% free of any synthetic substances such as most pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. Here at The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company, where applicable, we aim for an even higher percentage rate, if not free of any synthetic substance altogether.
This, in turn, maintains mother nature through the conservation of soils and water sources, as well as caring for those who work at coffee farms and estates. This is because, like the plants themselves, workers are also subjected to these fundamentally unhealthy substances. Although, generally speaking, the term ‘Organic’ only caters to ensuring that coffees do not come into contact with man-made pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, its environmentally-friendly results likewise help to maintain the world we all so proudly share. Alas, choosing organic is choosing an improved quality of bean. It is also choosing to look after the planet, and ultimately, all those who inhabit it.
Similar to our wide selection of Organic Teas, any of our coffee products certified organic must adhere to strict EU regulation, which is notably robust and uniform across much of Europe. Each container of coffee is checked and sampled, and if a particular coffee fails inspection, the container is then resealed and returned to the country of origin.
Further to this, in the country of origin itself, yearly inspections are carried out at every producing farm, estate, or specific paddock to ensure that no synthetics have been applied to the plot for at least three years. This is necessary if farmers wish to achieve organic certification. These two elements combined guarantee that every coffee certified organic is, as the saying goes, ‘exactly what it says on the tin
We all want to live healthier, longer, and more active lives, so perhaps what is the most important factor to account for when exploring the world of organic coffees is what it does for you! Aside from their astoundingly enticing tastes and aromas, organic coffees are also generally considered ‘healthier’ compared with more conventional brews.
Preliminary studies conducted by a number of respectable institutes have only recently suggested that the frequent consumption of organic coffee can potentially offer health-promoting properties. Until more is known, however, The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company are simply proud to offer two coffees that are made using only sustainable methods, and as a result, are certified organic. These are Nicaraguan Bird Friendly Coffee and New Guinea Coffee Organic.
It should also be taken into account that, where possible, our establishment will always strive for this sustainability, no matter the coffee type. While a number of our other coffees may not have the official title as an ‘Organic Coffee’, this does not necessarily mean synthetic substances are used in all cases. Many specialty coffee farmers employ an eco-friendly and integrated pest management approach that doesn’t rely on synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers.
In fact, many such farms are at a high enough elevation that pest issues are not commonplace. The main difference between our Organic Coffee beverages and many of our other coffee products is quite simply the absolute guarantee of sustainability. However, we also have a wide range of brews that are likewise eco-friendly.
