Caffeine in Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee

Ethiopian Coffee Beans from Yirgacheffe have one thing in common with the likes of Kenya, Colombian and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.

Unless made into a Decaf Coffee, each one has a considerable amount of caffeine, a stimulating chemical compound used to enhance focus and energy levels. Somewhat more specifically, you can expect about 100-mg of caffeine per serving.

Taste Profile and Characteristics

The Yirgacheffe Coffee region is in what was once called Sidamo Province. In other words, infusions from here are, in fact, Sidamo Coffee. However, there are distinctions due in part to climatic differences across the area.

The beverage you’ve chosen provides a balanced acidity with notes of dark berries and chocolate. Light on the palate but delectable in flavour, you’re bound to love it.

What is Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee’s Story?

Ethiopia in East Africa is the birthplace of Coffee. Many centuries ago, legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi stumbled upon his animals grazing on an unknown plant. The goats appeared to be hyperactive after eating it, and, as a result, Kaldi tried it for himself.

Having experienced the same elation as his flock, he took the plant’s berries to the local spiritual leaders near Lake Tana.

But the religious folk were unimpressed, believing the discovery to be the work of demonic forces. They tossed the berries into an open fire, at which point the room soon filled with a mesmerising aroma.

The beans were retrieved and then crushed to extinguish the embers. Finally, the spiritual leaders transferred them to an ewer and poured hot water over them. The world of Coffee had been kickstarted!

Today, the Ethiopian Coffee industry employs some 15 million people for various aspects of production. Harvesting of Ethiopian Coffee Yirgacheffe occurs at elevations between 1,500 and 2,200 metres above sea level, starting in November and ending in February.

The beans from the country account for around 3% of the global Coffee market - and they’re becoming increasingly sought-after every year.
