Tea can help to boost immunity, it contains a substance called L-theanine which is broken down in the liver and turned into ethylamine which can boost the immune system’s response and help to fight disease.
As well as this immune system boosting substance, green tea contains many nutrients and antioxidants which can help to keep your body healthy. The catechins in green tea - or any tea - can help to repair damaged cells from oxidative stress. Green tea in particular has more of these catechins than Oolong tea or black tea due to the way in which it’s processed, the longer oxidization takes place for black tea means that it does lose some of its health benefits.
Green tea may be the best tea for an immune system boost but there are other teas that also have been shown to have a positive effect on the body’s defences.
Some herbal teas have been shown to boost the immune system such as, chamomile tea which contains a substance that boosts the body’s production of bacteria fighting chemicals; Rooibos tea is another immunity boosting tea and is also naturally caffeine free; and mint teas such as peppermint herbal tea have anti-inflammatory properties and can stimulate the immune system.
