Many consider Organic Tea the way forward within the Tea Industry. Not only does consuming Organic tea improve your health, but also improves the lives of tea pickers in these Estates – including Phuguri. Free of synthetic fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides, this Tea strives to be unique with its small, neat leaf and delicate flavour contributing to its worldwide recognition.

Organic Tea, as a whole, is certified by the regulatory body within the producing country and then checked and certified again as it enters the European Union. The EU regulations on organic products are very robust and uniform across Europe. Each container of tea is checked and sampled and if a Tea fails inspection, the container is resealed and returned to the country of origin. This ensures that you will only get the finest quality tea when you shop organic!

The history of Darjeeling tea is short, yet incredibly interesting. It begins nearly 200 years ago, when the renowned Scottish explorer and botanist, Robert Fortune, smuggled tea seeds from China to plant within the Darjeeling district. However, it would not be until the mid-19th Century that English traders began to look to India for their tea exports as tensions grew between the British Empire and China – Britain’s sole supplier of the time. Soon, the mass-production of Darjeeling tea saw the area expand from a small hamlet nestled within the Himalayas to an industrial asset of 39 plantations of 1,000 acres producing 133,000 lbs of tea!

When India obtained its independence in 1947, the ownership of most tea gardens transferred to Indian entrepreneurs. 20 years later however, the country experienced a political upheaval with communist parties seizing power in West Bengal. This brought about uncertain times for the plantations of Darjeeling for the next 35 years, with the official breakup of the USSR in 1991 – one of the region’s biggest buyers – also causing major setbacks as plantations struggled to make up for their losses. Despite this, Darjeeling’s industry prevailed, and as of the 21st Century, the district is now one of the three main tea-producing regions of India.
