Originating from the Thurbo tea estate, this Tea is the first and best of the new season’s crop. It is picked between the 4th and the 6th April and has a large, delicate, greenish leaf with tip. Often described as ‘The Champagne of Teas’, Darjeeling Teas have a proud and reputable history within the tea industry. In fact, most of the tea bushes found within the district owe their origin to the famous Scottish explorer and botanist, Robert Fortune, who over 200 years ago, smuggled tea seeds from China to plant in Darjeeling. However, it would not be until the early Victorian era that experimental cultivation took hold of the district as English traders grew wary of China as their sole tea supplier. This subsequently resulted in the mass-production of tea in India, with Darjeeling playing a key role in exports. The effort was spearheaded by Dr. Campbell, Superintendent of the District, who also happened to be an avid horticulturist. By 1866, Darjeeling had grown from being a small hamlet of a few houses in a secluded corner of the Himalayas, to a bustling industrial asset with 39 tea plantations of 1000 acres producing 133,000 lbs of tea.
Today, the district now boasts around 80 tea estates in the hills which have been recognised as Darjeeling tea producers, by the Tea Board of India. These estates cover approximately 17,500 hectares and produce over 9 million kg of tea! They are known around the world for their unique character and their complex and delicate flavour, as well as the intricate method required to ensure all blends are of the finest possible quality. Darjeeling First Flush tea in particular, is perhaps one of the most sought-after, with harvesting occurring between February to mid-April.
