Lu An Gua Pian is a Chinese Green Tea. Its nickname of “Melon Seed Tea” derives from the appearance of the flat and oval leaves, which resemble melon seeds. Created from the second leaf of the Tea plant branch, it is one of the most desired infusions available.

What is Lu An Gua Pian? 

This Loose Leaf Tea originates from the Lu’an City Prefecture of the Anhui Province of China. It dates back to the Chinese Tang Dynasty when it was highlighted in the iconic book “Tea Classic”, written by Lu Yu. I

n the Ming Dynasty, it had become renowned for treating sunstroke before becoming a popular Tribute Tea (Gong Cha) to the imperial family of the Qing Dynasty. 

Does it Contain Caffeine?

The days of gifting Lu An Gua Pian to the royal court might be over. However, it remains an ever-sought-after Tea due to the moderate amount of caffeine it contains. Specifically, you can expect about 30-mg of the stimulant per 8-oz serving.

How to Brew Lu An Gua Pian Tea

  1. Purchase a Tea Filter or Infuser and fill it with Tea.

  2. Place the item in a cup or mug of your choice.

  3. Boil fresh water and let it cool to temperatures between 70°C and 80°C.

  4. Fill the cup with water and allow it to steep for 1-3 minutes. 

How To Serve: Consider lemon or honey. Alternatively, serve without additions. 

Tasting Notes: Smooth, light and refreshing, it imparts a vegetal note with a sweet finish.
