One of the first records of Holsworthy exists in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it went by the name “Haldeword”. During this period, it was part of the Hundred of Black Torrington.

The town was later held by Royalist forces in the English Civil War before being recaptured by Parliamentarians in 1646. It was eventually home to dozens of German and Italian Prisoners throughout the Second World War.
