In Old English, the word “Chelsea” means “landing place on the river for chalk or limestone.” The area was once the home of the Manor of Chelsea, which was later acquired by King Henry VIII.

During his reign, two of King Henry’s wives, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr, lived here. Years later, it also became the residence of the future Queen Elizabeth I.

Today, Chelsea remains a place fit for royalty. Such is its affluence that some have dubbed it “a village of palaces”. It is also the birthplace of the delicious Chelsea bun. Should you choose to visit an Afternoon Tea Chelsea venue, be sure to tuck into one of these heavenly treats!
