Perhaps most iconic is the East End of London, which began to develop significantly during the medieval era. However, the first known written record of the East End as a distinct entity wasn’t until 1720.
This was in John Strype’s ‘Survey of London’. Just over a hundred years later, East London became the home of the Royal Victoria Dock, opened in Newham.
