Only a few dwellings existed in Tenterden, then known as “Heroden”, until about the 14th century. The local wool industry later helped to develop the area significantly.
By 1449, the town had become a member of the historic Cinque Port Confederation. During this time, Tenterden had access to the sea, with much of what is now Romney Marsh underwater.
Since then, the surrounding geography has changed dramatically. Tenterden now lies many miles away from the ocean. However, this has had little impact on it being a popular tourist destination.
Tenterden Town railway station, for example, continues to enthral thousands yearly. There is also, of course, the option of having an Afternoon Tea in Tenterden!
