A Brief History of China Black Tea
Black Tea has mysterious origins. Although a few theories exist, no one can truly agree on how and when it first emerged. Some argue that the first Black Tea created was Lapsang Souchong during the Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Whether there is any truth to this remains a topic of significant debate. However, there is nevertheless one fascinating legend surrounding it.
The story in question follows a group of farmers living near the village of Tong Mu Guan. One day, while tending to their Tea crop, the farmers were confronted by bandits looking to steal their produce.
These villainous raiders demanded that the Tea be ready for taking upon their return to the village. Yet the farmers weren’t prepared to give up so easily.
Harvesting the leaves as quickly as possible, the dutiful workers, keen to get their crop to market, decided to dry it over pinewood fires. The result was an unmistakably smoked Tea. At first, the farmers grew disheartened, believing they’d ruined their produce.
However, as it turned out, they hadn’t. Upon arriving at the market, several Dutch traders expressed interest in this new, strange creation.
Lapsang Souchong, and indeed Black Tea as a whole, had been born. Over the course of the next few centuries, producers perfected the art of creating it, giving rise to a plethora of other varieties. Our Rose Congou is one such example. Why not try it today?
