Feeling a little “under the weather”? There’s a Tea for that. In fact, there are many. Influenza, also known as the Flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. Most symptoms of the flu are characterised as “mild”; however, when left unchecked, the severity can increase, sometimes dramatically.

It’s important to take the advice of medical professionals, with recommendations such as flu jabs commonplace. The frequent consumption of certain types of Tea, however, could help one along the way to getting better.

Take Ginger Tea, for example, a beverage long touted for its ability to ward off minor illnesses. Ginger Root Tea has high concentrations of vitamin C, a component renowned for supporting the immune system. Furthermore, according to a study conducted at the University of Maryland Medical Center, USA, 1 gram daily of ginger may reduce nausea and vomiting.

Another popular Tea associated with reduced symptoms of flu is Turmeric Tea, a relative of ginger, with its capabilities peer-reviewed and published in over 5,600 biomedical study reports. According to some of these reports, Turmeric Tea has antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic qualities. It can reduce viral replication by approximately 90% in laboratory cells infected with influenza varieties, according to a study published in a 2009 edition of “Emerging Infectious Diseases”.

But, of course, these are just two of numerous Tea types capable of combating the flu. Other examples include Pine Needles Herbal Tea, another beverage with high concentrations of vitamin C; Rooibos Tea, an exclusively South African Herbal Tea known to maintain the immune system while additionally reducing allergy symptoms; and Mountain Tea Sideritis Scardica Olympus Tea, which is “as potent as Green Tea at inducing cellular antioxidant defences and preventing oxidative stress”, according to a published report in the Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture.
