Detox

“Detox” is the colloquial term for “Detoxification”. It’s a word thrown around gossip magazines, with many suggesting it to be a fad; however, it isn’t. There is science, method, extensive research - and when it comes to Tea, there is a great deal of fun, too. But what exactly does it all mean? Detoxification refers to the process of removing toxins from the body.

A common detox is the removal of alcohol traces from the liver, hence the popularity of embarking on a detox in the new year! However, there is much more to a detox, especially when it comes to Tea.

Herbal Teas, in particular, contain an abundance of vitamins, minerals and other antioxidants capable of flushing one’s system of unwanted toxins. We stock several purpose-blended “Detox” Teas, including Detox Lemon and Ginger Tea, Detox Fruit Tea, Detox Yerba Mate and Chilli Tea and Detox Liquorice Tea, although many other Teas in our range offer detoxifying qualities.

One Tea to consider is Dandelion Tea, which acts as a natural diuretic and can increase urine production by promoting the excretion of salts and water from the kidneys. Another Tea is Milk Thistle Tea, which contains beneficial substances called silymarin, a group of three flavonoids in turn called silibinin, silydianin and silicristin; these compounds work together to strengthen the outer membranes of liver cells and reduce the number of toxins entering cells.

There are many more, including Turmeric Herbal Tea, Dandelion Root Tea, Tulsi Ginger Chai and Blackcurrant Leaves Tea. It’s also worth noting that some so-called “real” Teas (Teas to contain leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant) make good Detox Teas, such as White Kenya Matcha Tea, Gunpowder Formosa Green Tea and Pu erh Special 3 Year Old Vintage Tea.

Before committing to a detox, consider conducting your own research to ensure you have all the adequate tools to hand. To make one’s detox successful, a relatively strict exercise and dietary plan should accompany the process. Once you’ve adhered to this, however, expect results. And with the help of one of our Detox Teas, you’ll be well on your way to meeting your “new year, new me” goal!
