Does Detox Tea Work?

Does Detox Tea Work?

The term “Detox”, a phrase commonly used in many a gossip magazine, is short for “Detoxification”. This refers to removing the body of toxins. An example of something classed as a ‘toxin’ is alcohol, which can remain in our system for a long time after we’ve consumed it. But how exactly do you get rid of it? How exactly do you detoxify the body?

Enter Detox Tea, or, if you don’t like that term, a Natural Cleansing Tea. This isn’t a Type of Tea per se; rather, a variety of beverages with detoxifying qualities. Some, such as Milk Thistle Tea and Dandelion Root Tea, are good Liver Detox Teas.

Others, such as Green Tea, support the detoxifying systems in our body, including the liver, instead of being Detox Teas in the conventional sense. It’s worth noting, however, that Green Tea can help you to lose weight.

The short answer is yes, Detox Teas work. Yet some do so in different ways than you might expect. Surprises include Rooibos having the ability to ‘detox’ the skin, thus making it a good Detox Tea for acne. Or, as mentioned, Green Tea being an excellent Detox Tea for weight loss.

Its prevalence in antioxidants, in particular, make Green Tea the best Detox Tea for weight loss. However, detoxification means different things to different people. In this context, it refers to dietary support, rather than removing toxins.

Antioxidants found in Green Tea include polyphenols. The most common type of polyphenols are flavonoids. Among the various flavonoids, there are catechins. And among the various catechins, there is one particularly beneficial one called Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

According to a meta-analysis of weight loss studies, “catechins [including EGCG] significantly decreased body weight and significantly maintained body weight after a [extended] period.” The research indicated that Green Tea could boost the metabolism of fat cells, enabling the body to burn fat quicker and more efficiently.

What this means in the context of detoxification is that, with Green Tea, periods of exercise could produce better, indeed more noticeable results. If this is your interpretation of a detox, then you’ll be hard pressed to find a better brew. If you have weight loss goals, choose a Green Tea cleanse.

Liver Detox Tea

Liver Detox Tea

Traditionally, when we talk about a Detox, we’re referring to the liver. For this, Loose Leaf Milk Thistle Herbal Tea is the way to go.

It comes from the Silybum Marianum plant of the Asteraceae family, which can grow to be 1.5 metres (approx 5 feet) tall. Its conspicuous, glossy green, white-veined, sinuate lobed leaves are thornily toothed at the edges. These leaves are the component used to make Milk Thistle Tea. They are also the component capable of detoxifying the liver.

In 1650, Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654), an English botanist, herbalist and physician, wrote that Milk Thistle could effectively support the normal functioning of the liver while, most importantly, “removing obstructions”. He wasn’t wrong.

Milk Thistle contains silymarin. This is a group of three flavonoids which, in turn, are called silibinin, silydianin and silicristin. These antioxidants work together in strengthening the outer membranes of the liver cells while reducing the number of toxins entering these cells.

One animal-based study noted that the “administration of silymarin caused body weight loss in diet induced obesity (DIO) mice.” It went on to state that “each group proved that silymarin treatment significantly decreased inflammation in DIO.” Most importantly, it recognised that “silymarin effectively protected [the] liver.”

Another study, published in 2010 by the US National Library of Medicine, found that silymarin “acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation. It also has antifibrotic activity and may act as a toxin blockade agent by inhibiting the binding of toxins to the hepatocyte cell membrane receptors.”

It continued: “Silymarin reduces liver injury caused by acetaminophen, carbon tetrachloride, radiation, iron overload, phenylhydrazine, alcohol, cold ischaemia and Amanita phalloides. Silymarin has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases.”

It’s essential to recognise, however, that both of these studies were animal-based. We await further research with human participants.

Detox Tea for Acne

Many see a Detox as a sort of ‘purification’. This, to some, applies to our exterior appearance as much as our internal workings. When it comes to our skin health, Rooibos is the brew of choice. This is because, like Green Tea, it contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Constituents like alpha hydroxy acid and zinc, for example, can reduce pimples, blackheads and sunburns. It even has anti-ageing properties, according to researchers at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Most important of all is the anti-inflammatory response brought about from drinking this type of tea. Indeed, the Benefits of Rooibos Tea that makes it a good Detox Tea for acne. A 2009 study reported that  Rooibos showed reduced levels of inflammation damage. Again, however, note “animal-based”.
